The ruins of Persepolis, the greatest city of ancient Persia, lie in southwestern Iran. This photograph of the ruins shows part of an audience hall of Darius I, who ruled the vast Persian Empire from 522 B.C. until his death in 486 B.C. Darius built Persepolis about 518 B.C.
